Since its founding in 1995, SPIRITUS Chamber Choir has enriched the Calgary and Canadian choral scene with performances of high-quality choral repertoire. Known for diverse programming, SPIRITUS has championed music both old and new from around the world, and integrated various performing and visual arts within its performances.
SPIRITUS performs a considerable amount of new choral music and has commissioned a number of new works, including those by Calgary composers Allan Bevan and Marcel Bergmann. In addition, the choir has premiered compositions by Quenten Doolittle and William Jordan. SPIRITUS has performed at the University of Calgary's New Music Festival and has collaborated with the Old Trout Puppet Workshop, VoiceScapes, New Works Calgary and The Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra.
In 1999 SPIRITUS won an international recording award for its performance of Anton Bruckner’s Os Justi under the direction of David Wilson (founding director) and in 2000 was a finalist in the CBC National Choral Competition. The tradition of excellence continues as the choir was named a winner in the 2010 National Competition for Amateur Choirs in May. Over the past two years SPIRITUS has embarked on a recording project at the Banff Centre for the Performing Arts. In May 2010, the choir issued its first CD in over a decade and has started planning towards another CD for release in November 2011.
SPIRITUS is recognized regionally and nationally through broadcasts on CBC. In the past two seasons the choir has been heard on Radio Two’s Choral Concert and The Signal. In addition, SPIRITUS, in collaboration with Da Camera Singers was invited to perform at PODIUM, the National Conference of the Association of Canadian Choral Communities in Saskatoon May 2010. The choir is also making plans for an international tour in 2011. Past conductors include David Wilson (founding director), Janet Youngdahl and Pierre Simard. |
